What's up at school?

Fifth Grade

In science we will begin our study of the properties of matter. We will explore mass, volume, weight, density, solids, liquids and gases. The children will construct their own aluminum foil boat to see how many paper clips it can hold and still float in water. Great fun!

In social studies chapter 5 will begin with the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the Battle of the Spanish Armada. We will then cover the Jamestown Colony, followed by the French and Dutch Settlements. The pilgrims and Thanksgiving will be presented in this chapter.

In religion we will be moving on to Chapter 4 “Sacramentals: Signs of God’s Love.”  This ends Unit 1 which means there will be a cumulative test over the first 4 chapters  We will also spend time in class preparing for the changes in Mass prayers that will be used when Advent begins.

In language arts and  reading we are studying about Jane Goodall. Our book of the month was also about her. The children are creating posters to present about one of the 10 things Jane says people should do to protect wildlife. They will also research an animal and create a poem using facts found..

In spelling units 10-14 will be covered.

In English we are finishing Unit 2 and the test is scheduled for Nov. 10. Unit 3 will cover all types of verbs beginning with action verbs, direct objects and main and helping verbs.

In math we are currently studying about types of angles and types of triangles. We will learn to identify and create tessellations. Our test for chapter 3 is scheduled for Nov. 16. Chapter 4 focuses on division. The children will be taught long and short division with and without remainders and how to interpret remainders.

On November 8th the 5th graders will have a visit from a Vietnam War veteran. Thanks to Tracy Butts for setting this up.
